Nepal's drifting apart (during King Mahendra's rule) could be considered a blessing in disguise if one could reconcile oneself to the fact that relations between two countries were more firm and solid if they were based on the hard calculations of enlightened national interest than on the transitory bases of emotion and historical closeness. No student or practitioner of foreign policy could ignore the significance of the dictates of geography and economy and given the land-locked position and open border of Nepal with India, one could reasonably be sure that Nepal's assertions and public statements of its leaders notwithstanding, no government in Nepal would be able to ignore and bypass India.
