Machiavelli: Still Shocking after Five Centuries | The National Interest:
No political philosopher is as misunderstood and as vilified for things he didn't do as Niccolo Machiavelli. Machiavelli only advocated autonomous space for politics. He was not unethical, but simply amoral realist. From Kautilya, Mencius & Thucydides to Hobbes and Morgenthau philosophers of statecraft have taken position which is called Realism. Machiavelli was simply a realist.
